How to Take a Queer Photograph, Hue, Vietnam, 2025. Chromogenic print

The photograph captures my friend X. – also a co-maker of the work – sitting on top of a rectangular column built from around 200 concrete blocks. They hold a remote shutter release I gave them, instructed to press it whenever they felt ready to take the photograph, while I held the camera and composed the frame.

The work was made possible through the support of bác/Mr. Thạnh and bác/Mr. Xứng (who constructed the temporary sculpture), as well as the folks at AirHue – anh Nu, chị Ngọc, and Bảo Ngân – who offered the shooting location and helped with local logistics and sourcing. And lastly, to my friend X., thank you for your bravery, your trust, and for being part of this work.
