The center of every photograph in this series is one of my close friends, Xứng, who is also a Vietnamese queer. The photos, spanning from early 2023 to the present, reflect my journey with photography and my relationship with Xứng. I am interested in Xứng and his hybrid persona, with a male body and a very distinctive style of dress. He is bald himself, which is somehow also characteristic of Vietnamese men, representing masculinity.
The idea of photographing him, I believe, is also an act of documenting the travels of his alter-egos, and this tendency aims to explore his gender and identity, developing the female alter-ego while playfully confronting stereotypes.
These performative photographs also serve as a collaboration between Xứng and me because he trusts me with his image. Ultimately expressing our belief in freedom and being true to oneself.
