Matter of Being: In-Context

Living Elsewhere, 2024. Chromogenic print

The figures appear caught in setting moments. By employing a model who portrays a version of myself and multiplying them into a self-constructed landscape, I formulate composition and characters around these transient instances, while expressing an intense sense of presence grounded in time and place.

Without the intention of evoking sequence or narrative, I use the physicality of the human body to express the cognitive, exploring a personal process of self-reflexivity amidst its relation with material space.

Positioning my works along the border between documentary and fiction, this dual nature of photography is expressed through a staging of the ‘real’ to convey ideas about the multi-faceted dilemmas of the human condition in everyday life, while also allowing for the contemplation of the limits of representation.

Two photographs from this series were selected to be presented in a group exhibition titled Wandering Wondering, curated by Chelsea Chua, at the Objectifs Chapel Gallery in Singapore from 01 to 18 August 2024, continuing my participation in the 2023 Young Photographers’ Mentorship Programme by Objectifs.
