How to Take a Queer Photograph, Hue, Vietnam, 2025. Chromogenic print

The photograph captures my friend Xứng – also a co-maker of the work – sitting on top of a rectangular column built from around 200 concrete blocks. They hold a remote shutter release I gave them, instructed to press it whenever they felt ready to take the photograph, while I held the camera and composed the frame.
This work came together thanks to the support of bác/Mr. Thạnh and bác/Mr. Xứng, who built the temporary sculpture; the team at AirHue – anh Nu, chị Ngọc, and Ngân – who offered the shooting location and helped with logistics and sourcing; and anh Phong of Ao Làng, whose contribution supported a portion of the production phase.
